A new Monticello Ordinance No. 2019-817 concerning inoperable or abandoned automobiles, trucks, motor homes, campers etc., requires the Police Department to enforce the Ordinance and a fine for failure to remove the offending vehicle from affected property. The Ordinance allows individuals to make a complaint to the Police Department regarding inoperable vehicles in their neighborhood or elsewhere. After receiving the complaint, an officer will contact the offending property owner and, after finding the vehicle meets the definition of "inoperable vehicle" will issue a citation and allow the property owner 30 days to remove the vehicle at his/her expense, apply for a permit or file an appeal to the Monticello City Council. After 30 days, if the vehicle has not been removed the Ordinance provides for a fine of $25.00 but not more than $100.00 per day.
It has been determined that most of the Towing companies in Monticello will pick up an inoperable vehicle, in most cases, for their salvage value costing the property owner nothing to have the offending vehicle removed from their property.
A copy of the Ordinance Number 2019-817 can be picked up at City Hall.
